Athletics

A Biblical Understanding of Physical Fitness

Providence Athletics supports the school’s mission to cultivate wisdom and virtue and foster discipleship by providing rigorous physical training and competition to enable students at all skill and experience levels to grow in fitness, faith, and Christlikeness. We train and we play in His name, for His glory, and for our joy.

In pursuit of these goals we will be guided by God’s word and our commitments to gospel witness, joy, growth, and healthy school community.

Athletics Values

  • Gospel Witness

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is at the heart of everything we do at Providence, and it’s at the heart of our athletic program. We pray our student-athletes will be counter-cultural, playing for a higher purpose. 1 Cor. 9:25: “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
  • Joy

Athletics should be an opportunity for children to play and enjoy the physical world. As founding board member Dave McMurry writes, “Our hearts and minds should be one. Our bodies and souls should be one. God created glorious physical beings, and in the end his resurrection will redeem a people to a glorious physicality.  We will love God seamlessly with all that we are.”

  • Community

We are blessed to have a special school community at Providence, marked by wonderful school spirit. Athletics provides a way for the community to come together and celebrate. And there is also community within the teams: athletes learn to honor one another through being supportive teammates.
  • Growth

At one level, athletics provides an opportunity for people to grow in strength, endurance, coordination, and technique. At another level, athletics provides opportunities to grow in virtues like self-control, perseverance, and courage.
